It is a surgical technique that removes hair follicles from one part of the body called ‘Donor site/ Safe zone' which is the back of head to the balding part of the head known as ‘Recipient site'. This technique is mainly used to treat Male baldness (Androgenic alopecia). In rare cases, women also suffer from hair loss in small smear and so also need hair transplantation. Transplantation Methods:
There are different techniques of transplanting hair follicles, everything has its own advantages and disadvantages regardless of transplantation.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT): In this process the surgeon harvests a strip of skin from the posterior scalp of 6- 10 cm length, in an area of permanent hair growth i.e., from the back of head. Each incision is planned so that intact hair follicles are removed. Slivering and follicular unit are separated. This process is done carefully to avoid damage to the follicular cells used for grafting.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): This is an advanced treatment for hair fall. In this procedure surgeon will make small punctures in the scalp where the hair strands are picked and transplanted by using a special surgical needle. After the grafting process, the head areas are covered with bandages, and the follicles and scalp heal quickly in some time. This procedure is more time consuming (6-8 hrs.) than strip surgery. It gives a very natural results and quiet a painless procedure.
