What Is Constipation?
If you have difficulty moving your bowels, you may be suffering from constipation. Constipation occurs when a person's bowel movements are infrequent, less than once every three days, or when passing stool requires straining. Constipation should always be evaluated by a physician with a thorough consultation and examination to establish an accurate diagnosis and constipation treatment plan and to rule out a serious illness or condition.
What Is Chronic Constipation?
Chronic constipation is the presence of two or more of the following:
- Straining during at least 25% of bowel movements;
- Lumpy or hard stools in at least 25% of bowel movements;
- The sensation of incomplete evacuations for at least 25% of bowel movements;
- The feeling of anorectal blockage for at least 25% of bowel movements;
- Manual maneuvers to facilitate at least 25% of bowel movements;
- Fewer than three bowel movements each week.
