316L stainless steel is a low carbon version of 316 stainless steel. Due to its resistance to boundary carbide precipitation, molybdenum-containing steels are popular for use in severe corrosion environments. Material is widely used in heavy gauge welded components, and weld annealing is only required in high stress environments. 316L has a wide range of applications, especially in marine applications due to its high corrosion resistance.
Among austenitic stainless steels, 316L is the standard molybdenum-bearing grade. Molybdenum makes Grade 316 more corrosion resistant than Grade 304, especially in chloride environments where pitting and crevice corrosion are more likely to occur. It has excellent forming and welding properties. For applications in industrial, architectural, and transportation fields, it can be brake or rolled and formed into a variety of parts. The welding characteristics of grade 316L are also exceptional. Welding thin sections does not require post-weld annealing.
The grade 316L is a low carbon version of 316 and is immune to sensitization (grain boundary carbide precipitation). It is therefore extensively used in heavy gauge welded components (over 6mm). The higher carbon content of grade 316H makes it suitable for use at elevated temperatures, as does the stabilized grade 316Ti.
